Next Step is hiring a part-time ESL Instructor 

Thanks to the generous support of the Nottawasaga Foundation,  we are looking to expand our programming to include evening English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to meet the growing need in the community.  To this end, we are looking to hire an experienced ESL instructor to do small group tutoring at our location in Alliston.   

 

Overview

As a part-time ESL instructor at Next Step, you will be providing non-credit language instruction to adult learners.  Instruction will take place in the evenings.  Classes will be approximately 90 minutes in duration.  There will be two different levels of classes: one session will be for beginners who are ESL Level 4 and lower, and the other session will be for intermediate learners.

You will be responsible for instructing two classes a week.  Each class will be between 1-2 hours in length with 1 hour of prep time per week for a total of 5 hours per week.  This is a contract position with the possibility of more hours based on funding and community need. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities will follow Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) and Canadian Language Benchmarks CLB guidelines:

  • assess students to determine their needs and goals; 

  • develop lesson and long-range plans that consist of appropriate themes, goals, and objectives to be covered in each instructional session;

  • incorporate speaking, listening, reading, and writing into activities;

  • instruct classes according to learner’s needs in accordance with individual goal paths, levels and needs using appropriate and relevant resources and methods of delivery; 

  • organize suitable instructional materials, visual aids, and books; 

  • assess student progress according to Canadian Language Benchmarks and Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) on an ongoing basis;

  • participate in communicating the attendance/participation guidelines and expectations for students;

  • create a comfortable, non-threatening, and engaging environment for the students;

  • be aware of cultural differences and ensure that the rights of all students are respected;

  • develop students’ understanding and appreciation for Canadian society, culture, and traditions; 

  • carry out administrative, record-keeping, and reporting duties as required, e.g., collect and provide daily attendance and other statistical information; and

  • ·participate in required professional development activities, e.g., workshops, conferences, and staff meetings.

Demonstrate strong commitment to meeting the needs of co-workers, managers, clients, or community members, striving to ensure their satisfaction. 

​

Continuous Learning 

Demonstrates eagerness to acquire necessary technical knowledge, skills, and judgment to accomplish a result or to serve clients’ needs effectively; has the desire and drive to acquire knowledge and skills necessary to perform the job more effectively.

Qualifications 

  • TESL Ontario certificate and TESL Ontario membership in good standing;  

  • Strong background and abilities to plan and organize the instruction for adult learners;

  • Solid knowledge of Canadian Language Benchmarks and experience in assessing students’ progress according to CLB;

  • Experience in English language instruction; 

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion to effectively interact/work with diverse students and staff;

  • Effective communication within a team environment, with staff, students, community, and agency stakeholders;

  • Demonstrated ethical judgment and professional boundaries;

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of diverse newcomers;

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and 

  • The ability to be creative and flexible in planning. â€‹

 

Other requirements 

  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check (completed when offer is made) 

THE GRATE GROAN-UP SPELLING BEE 2025

Our 13th Annual Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee was a huge success thanks to our amazing community! We had 13 teams and  raised over $25,000.  As always, the costumes and unbelievable spelling made for an exciting and entertaining evening.  This year’s winner for Best Spelling was 'Bee Patient', sponsored by Feehely Gastaldi Law, with second place going to  ‘Bee Canadian A’ from The #1Ladies Knitting book club and third place to ‘‘Buzz Words’  from My Sister's Place.  Best Costumes was awarded to ‘Bedrock Bees’ from New Tecumseth Council and Most Team Spirit went to ‘Bee Canadian A’.

NEXT STEP RECEIVES $10,000 DONATION!

On Saturday August 13, 2022, Next Step was one of the lucky recipients of a $10,000 cheque from the Royal Canadian Legion Edward MacDonald Branch 499 Angus Ontario.  The Angus Legion raised funds through the recent "Catch the Ace" draw and selected several local charities to distribute the winnings amongst.  We are beyond grateful to have been chosen to receive this generous donation.

Donations are an important source of funding for Next Step and this donation will be used to further Next Step’s mission to provide FREE Adult Upgrading to increase employability and independence.

VIRTUAL CHOCOLATE TASTING!

On Friday February 12th at 7PM Next Step held its first Virtual Chocolate Tasting.  The turnout was amazing and we raised just over $1200.

VIRTUAL WINE TASTING!

On Friday October 16th, Next Step hosted its first Virtual Wine Tasting. The event was a fabulous success and we raised over $2500. 

Annual EVENTS

Next Step is a not-for-profit organization that is funded in part by the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development. The rest of our funding comes from great people like you! We have several events and thank our wonderful volunteers and sponsors for their support. 

THE GRATE GROAN-UP SPELLING BEE

Each April The Bee is held to raise funds to provide the best quality education to our learners here at Next Step. Teams of three, complete with costumes and team name, compete for prizes for Best Spellers, Best Costumes, and Best Team Spirit. The evening combines a traditional spelling bee with a dinner and silent auction. Join us for a night of fun to support a good cause.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION BBQ

Each summer we have a bbq for our volunteers as a thank you for their generous support and help. We hand out certificates to our tutors and students. 

THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Our Annual General Meeting is a meeting in which the board members and staff account for the previous year’s activities at Next Step. It is attended by board members, staff, members, ambassadors, volunteers, and even students. Members of the public are also welcome to attend. We report on our budget, training, marketing etc. for accountability. For more information please contact us.
